Prepare for a groundbreaking movement in the world of sports and betting as Missouri’s powerhouse sports teams join forces in a historic initiative.

This initiative aims to propel the legalization of sports betting onto the November ballot, setting the stage for a pivotal decision. With a strong coalition of sports giants and substantial support from leading betting platforms, Missouri is on the brink of a transformative change. Join us on this exhilarating journey as we explore the ins and outs of this game-changing endeavor.

Unified Front

In a momentous step, a coalition comprising Missouri’s six premier sports teams has launched an initiative petition drive with an ambitious goal—to bring the legalization of sports betting to the forefront of the November ballot.

Past Hurdles

Missouri’s journey towards legal sports betting has been a marathon. Last year, despite the state House passing House Bill 556 in March, the Senate’s legislative session concluded without addressing it. This marked the fifth consecutive year where sports betting failed to navigate both chambers in the state.

Sports Powerhouses

The campaign enjoys robust backing from Missouri’s sports titans, including the Kansas City Chiefs, the Kansas City Current, the Kansas City Royals, the St. Louis Cardinals, St. Louis Blues, and St. Louis City. Notably, DraftKings and FanDuel have made significant contributions, each donating $250,000 to establish a campaign committee for this initiative.

United for a Common Cause

Bill DeWitt III, President of the St. Louis Cardinals, voiced their collective mission: to advocate for the legalization of sports wagering in Missouri in a manner that is sensible, secure, and responsible. Their ultimate goal? Benefit their teams, fans, Missouri teachers, and all residents of the state.

The Signature Quest

The success of this endeavor hinges on gathering a minimum of 180,000 signatures by May 5, ensuring the initiative’s placement on the November ballot. If passed, it would grant Missouri’s 13 casinos and six professional sports teams the ability to offer both retail and online sports betting.

Empowering Teams

Under this measure, the responsibility for sports betting and advertising within a 400-yard radius of their stadiums would fall to the sports teams. Additionally, two mobile sports betting operators would be eligible to apply for online wagering licenses.

The Financial Framework

The initiative proposes a $250,000 fee for retail operations licenses, renewable every five years. Online licenses would carry a $500,000 price tag with a similar five-year renewal period. The state would impose a 10% tax on revenue but permit deductions of up to 25% for promotional credits. These funds would support a range of initiatives, including treatment for problem gambling and state education.
