In Q4, online gambling revenue in Portugal achieved an all-time high

According to the SRIJ, the gambling regulator in Portugal, the revenue for the last quarter of 2022 reached €195.3 million.

The SRIJ, Portugal’s gambling regulator, has announced that the online gambling revenue for Q4 2022 hit an unprecedented €195.3 million. This marks a year-on-year increase of 39.7%, and both online casino and sports betting segments saw record highs in revenue.

The latest revenue figures continue the upward trend in Portuguese gambling, building on the record Q3 revenue of €139.8 million. In the Q4 report, online casino revenue amounted to €109.8 million, representing a 48.3% increase from spending of €2.98 billion. Slot machines were the most popular online casino game, accounting for 79.8% of all bets, followed by roulette (8.5%) and blackjack (5.5%).

The Q4 report also revealed a 30% increase in sports betting revenue from the same period in 2021, with revenue reaching €85.5 million from a handle of €458.7 million. The majority of bets were placed on football, accounting for 74.2%, followed by basketball at 12.5% and tennis at 7.6%. The Fifa Football World Cup was responsible for a quarter of all bets placed.

The SRIJ also reported that 340,000 new players registered with operators, 60 per cent of them aged between 25 and 44. Self-exclusions were up by 41,500 year-on-year at 150,900 by the end of the quarter.

The regulator reported taking action against unlicensed operators who were targeting the Portuguese market, including sending 54 notices of closure and 74 blocking orders.
