The sector saw an 11.6% year-on-year increase, driven by explosive growth in online gaming, particularly slot machines.

Denmark’s Online Casino Surge Fuels April Gambling Boom: Slots Dominate Revenue Growth

3 Key Points

  • Online Casino Revenue Hits DKK331m—Up 21.4%. Slots dominated digital revenue at 78.9%, while blackjack and roulette followed with smaller but stable shares.
  • Mobile Sports Betting Continues to Lead the Channel Mix. Over 70% of DKK207m in sports betting revenue came from mobile, showcasing continued digital migration.
  • ROFUS Self-Exclusion Registrations Hit 60,325. A growing number of Danes are opting for permanent exclusion, underscoring the importance of responsible gambling measures.

Denmark’s Gambling Sector Posts Double-Digit Growth in April 2025

The Danish gambling market continued its upward momentum in April 2025, reporting a year-on-year revenue increase of 11.6%, according to newly released data from Spillemyndigheden, the national gambling regulator. Total gaming revenue for the month reached DKK665 million (€89 million), marking a 4.7% increase month-on-month, largely due to robust growth in the online casino sector.

Online Casino: The Digital Driver of Growth

Online casinos emerged once again as the primary growth engine, generating DKK331 million (€44.4 million)—a 21.4% increase compared to April 2024. This figure ranks as the second-highest monthly online casino revenue ever recorded in Denmark, only trailing the December 2024 peak of DKK347 million.

Slots remain the dominant force in the digital space, accounting for 78.9% of online casino revenue. Blackjack (6.6%) and roulette (6.4%) trailed far behind, illustrating Danish players’ overwhelming preference for slot-based gameplay. The enduring success of slots reflects global trends, where low entry barriers, high entertainment value, and engaging features continue to drive user retention.

Sports Betting: Mobile Dominance Continues

Sports betting revenue rose 6.1% year-on-year, reaching DKK207 million, buoyed by continued consumer preference for mobile-first platforms. Over 70% of wagers were placed via mobile, with desktop (15%) and physical betting shops (14.2%) representing shrinking shares.

This reflects a clear migration pattern: players in Denmark are moving away from traditional channels and into digital ecosystems—particularly those optimized for on-the-go access and streamlined UX/UI design.

Land-Based Gaming: Slight Declines, Mixed Signals

While digital is thriving, land-based gambling shows signs of stagnation. Revenue from slot machines in physical venues dropped 3.6% year-on-year, settling at DKK93 million. The majority of this came from gambling halls, while restaurant-based terminals contributed 20.3%.

Land-based casinos also saw a 2.5% decline, reporting DKK31 million in revenue. However, April still marked the best-performing month for casinos in 2025, signaling potential stabilization.

Bingo’s Return Under Regulation

This year also marked the reintroduction of commercially regulated land-based bingo, after new legislation took effect on January 1, 2025. The segment generated DKK3 million in April, a modest but important beginning for a product long associated with community-based gambling.

Responsible Gambling: ROFUS Expands, Helplines Active

Spillemyndigheden continues to bolster its responsible gambling framework. By the end of April:

  • The ROFUS self-exclusion register reached 60,325 users.
  • Nearly two-thirds of registrants opted for permanent exclusion.
  • The StopSpillet helpline received 50 enquiries, reflecting steady demand for support.

These figures underscore growing public awareness of gambling risks and the need for regulators and operators to invest in safer gambling technologies and outreach.

Denmark’s Role in European Regulation

April also brought regulatory leadership changes at the European level. Anders Dorph, Director of the Danish Gambling Authority, was appointed Chair of the Gambling Regulators’ European Forum (GREF). His appointment reflects Denmark’s rising stature in the European regulatory landscape, especially given its progressive stance on transparency, consumer protection, and digital monitoring tools.

Denmark Sets the Bar for Balanced Gambling Growth

Denmark’s April gambling report paints a clear picture: digital transformation is accelerating, and consumer demand for online casino content remains strong. While land-based revenues remain under pressure, regulatory innovations, like the return of commercial bingo and the expansion of ROFUS, show that Denmark is not only growing—it is maturing.

For industry stakeholders, the message is clear:

  • Online casino continues to be a lucrative segment, especially with robust player protections in place.
  • Mobile-first sports betting is the future, and desktop and retail options must innovate or decline.
  • Regulation and responsibility are no longer optional—they are key market drivers.

With responsible gambling infrastructure expanding and regulatory credibility increasing across Europe, Denmark offers a model market for how digital growth and consumer protection can coexist successfully.
