Playtech Sues Games Global Over IP Infringement in Live Casino
Playtech, a leading B2B gaming software provider, has initiated legal action against Games Global for alleged intellectual property (IP) infringement, following explosive claims of corporate espionage in its live casino division, OnAir Entertainment. The lawsuit, filed in the UK’s High Court, accuses Games Global of IP infringement involving multiple parties, including Realtime SIA, OnAir’s parent entity. This development follows accusations that OnAir Entertainment gained unauthorized access to Playtech’s internal systems after a former Playtech employee joined OnAir. In May, Playtech submitted a Part 7 Copyright and Design Right claim to the High Court, citing potential IP theft, marking a critical legal showdown between two major players in the iGaming space. Allegations first surfaced earlier this year when former OnAir senior product owner Ivans Ivanovs accused Igors Veliks, a former Playtech employee, of maintaining access to Playtech’s internal systems post-departure. These claims, verified by various sources, suggested that OnAir could have exploited sensitive information to gain an unfair advantage in the competitive live casino market. Playtech responded by launching an investigation into the matter. A spokesperson stated, “We are thoroughly investigating these allegations and potential IP infringements at OnAir Entertainment. We will provide updates as our inquiry progresses.” Although OnAir admitted that the employee had retained access to Playtech’s system, they defended their actions, claiming it was used purely for “competitor analysis,” which they described as standard practice within the iGaming industry. OnAir’s investigation, conducted by an unnamed independent party, concluded that no spying or infringing activities had occurred. Despite OnAir’s internal findings, Playtech pressed forward with its legal claim, which targets both Games Global Limited and Realtime SIA, the entity behind OnAir Entertainment. Represented by Linklaters, Playtech’s legal action aims to hold Games Global accountable for what it deems a breach of copyright and design rights.

In response, Games Global has enlisted Cooley LLP as its legal counsel, while OnAir Entertainment has sought the representation of Herbert Smith Freehills LLP. Both defendants are expected to challenge Playtech’s claims as the case unfolds.
A High-Stakes Legal Battle
This legal battle is significant for the iGaming industry, particularly in the competitive live casino sector, where innovation and proprietary technologies are key to success. The lawsuit, if successful, could set a precedent for IP protection and raise questions about industry practices related to competitor analysis.
Although the outcome remains uncertain, Playtech’s determination to protect its intellectual property could reshape the landscape of competition within the gaming industry. As the case proceeds, all eyes are on the UK’s High Court for what could be a landmark ruling.
Impact on the iGaming Industry
The Playtech vs. Games Global lawsuit highlights the critical importance of IP protection in a rapidly evolving and fiercely competitive industry. As both companies gear up for a legal showdown, the implications for the broader iGaming market could be far-reaching. A victory for Playtech would not only affirm its commitment to safeguarding its proprietary technology but could also reinforce stricter compliance measures across the industry.
