Mexican Casino Operator Caliplay Challenges Playtech in Court

Published

Grupo Caliente’s digital gambling arm, Caliplay, has initiated legal proceedings seeking to terminate its association with supplier Playtech. Both firms jointly run Caliente.MX, but they are currently at odds over the option to redeem an extra service fee.

Mexican Courts have acknowledged jurisdiction for Caliplay’s claim. The court’s interim order has urged Playtech to persist in delivering software and services while awaiting a conclusive verdict, ensuring uninterrupted operations.

Caliplay’s stance is clear; they wish for a swift resolution and remain devoted to fostering an open communication line with Playtech to amicably settle any disagreements.

Playtech, in contrast, believes the matter of an extra service fee up till December 31, 2034, must be a joint decision or determined by an impartial investment bank. As of June 30, 2022, the fee stood at €34.4m, a significant leap from €22.3m the year before.

Playtech, which partnered with Grupo Caliente as its primary interactive tech and platform collaborator since 2014, asserts the redemption option for the fee has elapsed. Conversely, Caliplay contends this option should persist and was taken aback when Playtech sought legal clarity in the UK without prior notice.

Playtech conveyed, “Caliplay remains a treasured client and ally, and our collaboration has been mutually beneficial. While Caliplay announced that the Mexican courts assumed jurisdiction on August 28, 2023, Playtech was informed about the legal actions today. Playtech has yet to review Caliplay’s court documents in Mexico and awaits more information before updating shareholders.”
