Illinois Casinos Hit a High Note with Record-Breaking December Revenue

Illinois casinos ended 2023 on a high note, with an impressive revenue boost in December, marking significant growth both month-over-month and year-over-year. The Illinois Gambling Board reported that the state’s 15 casinos collectively raked in $141.2 million from table games and slots, underscoring a thriving gaming sector.

Substantial Growth in Gaming Revenue and Tax Contributions

December’s gaming revenue exceeded November 2023’s total by approximately $11 million, showcasing a 7.7% increase. This growth was even more pronounced when compared to December 2022, with an astonishing 19% rise, translating to nearly $27 million in additional revenue. Consequently, these robust earnings led to substantial tax contributions to the state, totaling $37.8 million.

Rising Visitor Numbers and Admissions

The surge in revenue was accompanied by an increase in casino visitors. December saw nearly 1.1 million guests visiting Illinois casinos, a notable 30% jump compared to the same month the previous year. The month also observed a 10% increase in admissions over November, indicating a growing interest in the state’s gaming offerings.

Rivers Casino Des Plaines: A Major Contributor

Rivers Casino Des Plaines emerged as a standout in December, contributing more taxes than any other casino’s total earnings in Illinois. Attracting over 279,106 visitors, the casino represented more than a quarter of all state casino admissions for the month. Its impressive $45.4 million in adjusted gross revenue (AGR) accounted for 32.2% of Illinois’ total casino revenue.

  2. Grand Victoria Casino: $3.8 million in taxes ($716,685 in local taxes).
  3. Harrah’s Joliet Casino and Hotel: $3.3 million in taxes ($583,503 in local taxes).

A Banner Year for Illinois’ Casino Industry

December’s performance caps off a successful year for Illinois’ casino industry, characterized by robust revenue growth, increased patronage, and significant contributions to state and local coffers. This upward trend reflects the state’s dynamic gaming landscape and positions Illinois as a key player in the national casino market.
