Illinois Casinos Hit a High Note with Record-Breaking December Revenue
Illinois casinos ended 2023 on a high note, with an impressive revenue boost in December, marking significant growth both month-over-month and year-over-year. The Illinois Gambling Board reported that the state’s 15 casinos collectively raked in $141.2 million from table games and slots, underscoring a thriving gaming sector.
Substantial Growth in Gaming Revenue and Tax Contributions
December’s gaming revenue exceeded November 2023’s total by approximately $11 million, showcasing a 7.7% increase. This growth was even more pronounced when compared to December 2022, with an astonishing 19% rise, translating to nearly $27 million in additional revenue. Consequently, these robust earnings led to substantial tax contributions to the state, totaling $37.8 million.
Rising Visitor Numbers and Admissions
The surge in revenue was accompanied by an increase in casino visitors. December saw nearly 1.1 million guests visiting Illinois casinos, a notable 30% jump compared to the same month the previous year. The month also observed a 10% increase in admissions over November, indicating a growing interest in the state’s gaming offerings.
Rivers Casino Des Plaines: A Major Contributor
Rivers Casino Des Plaines emerged as a standout in December, contributing more taxes than any other casino’s total earnings in Illinois. Attracting over 279,106 visitors, the casino represented more than a quarter of all state casino admissions for the month. Its impressive $45.4 million in adjusted gross revenue (AGR) accounted for 32.2% of Illinois’ total casino revenue.
Significant Tax Contributions from Top Casinos
The tax contributions from Illinois casinos saw a substantial uptick in December. The top three casinos, in terms of revenue and tax contributions, were:
- Rivers Casino: $16 million in taxes ($2.6 million in local taxes).
- Grand Victoria Casino: $3.8 million in taxes ($716,685 in local taxes).
- Harrah’s Joliet Casino and Hotel: $3.3 million in taxes ($583,503 in local taxes).
