Kristina Geiger has been named as the head of the newly established operational support department at Spelinspektionen, the Swedish gambling regulator. This department has been introduced to enhance the regulatory functions of Spelinspektionen.
Having served in various high-level management positions, Kristina Geiger has been appointed as the head of the newly established operational support department at Spelinspektionen, the Swedish gambling regulator. Geiger’s recent role was as treasurer of the Statens Historiska Museum from 2021 to 2023. Prior to that, she held leadership positions in departmental support at the Swedish Competition Authority, the Karolinska Institute, and the Swedish Government Office. She also gained experience as a national expert during her time at the European Commission.
The introduction of this new department coincides with Spelinspektionen’s upcoming acquisition of new powers to combat unlicensed gambling, effective from July 1. Under these new powers, the regulator will be authorized to request transactional data from payment service providers (PSPs) and impose payment blocks on providers if their systems are found to facilitate payments to unlicensed gambling operators.
To support the implementation of these enhanced measures, additional funding was secured, with the government agreeing to increase Spelinspektionen’s annual operating budget by SEK 2.4 million (€210,000).
Expressing enthusiasm about the appointment, Spelinspektionen Director General Camilla Rosenberg stated, “We are delighted to welcome Kristina. With her, we gain an experienced leader accustomed to driving change. I am eager to commence my journey with the Gambling Inspectorate, given the importance of the authority’s mission and the trust placed in me to lead the department for operational support.”
