Gamban Restores Free Access in England With OHID Funding
Gamban has resumed free access to its gambling-blocking software in England, backed by OHID funding, months after moving England to a paid plan.

Gamban free access is returning to England: the gambling-blocking software provider has resumed its free service there, funded by the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities (OHID), according to SBC News on 6 November 2026.
The move reverses the paid model that England was placed on in spring 2026. It also puts a public health body, rather than individual users, back at the center of paying for blocking tools in the English market.
What changed for users in England
Gamban's free service in England has been restored, per SBC News. SBC reports that the money comes from OHID, which is part of the UK health system and works on prevention, through the Gambling Harms Prevention Fund. The size and duration of the grant have not been made public in the coverage so far.
For players, the practical effect is that blocking software on phones, tablets and computers no longer needs a paid plan in England. Gamban's notice on the end of TalkBanStop describes the paid arrangement that applied in England and Scotland: a subscription, with a 7-day free trial to start.
| Date | Development | Region |
|---|---|---|
| 31 March 2026 | TalkBanStop ends, per Gamban's own notice | England, Scotland, Wales |
| Spring 2026 | Gamban moves to a subscription with a 7-day free trial | England and Scotland |
| Spring 2026 | Gamban stays free | Wales |
| 6 November 2026 | Free services resume, per SBC News | England |
How the paid model came about
TalkBanStop was the program through which Gamban's software had been offered without charge to many users. Gamban's own explanation says it ended on 31 March 2026 and that the company would shift to a subscription in England and Scotland, while the product would remain free in Wales.
The program had a long funding history. Gamingo reported in 2023 that GambleAware approved a three-year extension of funding for TalkBanStop, a period that ran into the 2026 closure. When that funding stream ended, Gamban moved to charging users in two of the three nations it served.
The new OHID money changes the equation in England. Scotland is not named in the reported announcement, and Gamban's notice shows it had been on the same subscription footing as England. Scottish users should expect to rely on Gamban's own pricing page until the company says more.
A familiar funding pattern across Europe
Public bodies paying for free blocking software is not new. Gamingo covered the Dutch regulator Kansspelautoriteit (KSA) when it funded a free Gamban subscription for one year in 2024. Sweden's state-owned operator Svenska Spel partnered with Gamban earlier that year, and in Northern Ireland the Irish Football Association's players' union, PFA NI, partnered with Gamban in 2025 to reach footballers affected by gambling harm.
Cyprus took a different route, launching a national self-exclusion platform that operators must connect to. Blocking software and national self-exclusion registers cover different points of the player journey: one acts on the device, the other at the operator account.
What it means for operators and affiliates
Operators licensed in Great Britain have long pointed customers who self-exclude toward device-level blocking tools. A free version in England removes a cost barrier for the players most likely to need one. Affiliates and payment partners that signpost safer gambling tools can again describe Gamban as free for English users, based on the reported funding, though terms for the funded service should be taken from Gamban directly.
The open questions are commercial and practical: how long the OHID grant lasts, whether existing paying subscribers in England will be refunded or moved to the free tier, and whether Scotland receives equivalent support. Gamban has not published those details in the coverage available at the time of writing.
Status reviewed on 6 November 2026. Service terms come from Gamban's published notice on the end of TalkBanStop, and the OHID funding details from SBC News reporting. More legislation news and EMEA coverage.
