GambleAware Reports High Harm from Online Slots in 2022-23, Urges Responsible Gambling

In a revealing report, British charity GambleAware has highlighted a significant issue in the gambling industry: online slots have emerged as the leading source of gambling-related harm in 2022-23.

This troubling trend, part of GambleAware’s annual statistics, shows that over a third of all contacts to the National Gambling Treatment Service (NGTS) were related to online slots. This emphasizes the urgent need for more effective gambling harm reduction strategies.

Notably, online slots topped the list of gambling activities causing harm, followed by internet sports betting and fixed-odds gaming machines in bookmaker shops.

Demographics and Treatment Outcomes

The majority of those seeking treatment were under 45 years old, with the highest numbers reported in the 25-29 and 30-34 age groups. The majority of clients (69%) identified as male, and most were employed. Remarkably, the success of treatment programmes was highlighted, with 64% completing their courses and 88% reporting improved behavior post-treatment.

The report underscores the growing concern around online gambling, particularly with online slots and internet sports betting. These platforms, easily accessible and often featuring few limits on play, have become major sources of gambling-related issues. GambleAware’s study indicates that 67.2% of consumers being treated did so for some form of online gambling, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions in this area.
