GambleAware Reports High Harm from Online Slots in 2022-23, Urges Responsible Gambling

In a revealing report, British charity GambleAware has highlighted a significant issue in the gambling industry: online slots have emerged as the leading source of gambling-related harm in 2022-23.

This troubling trend, part of GambleAware’s annual statistics, shows that over a third of all contacts to the National Gambling Treatment Service (NGTS) were related to online slots. This emphasizes the urgent need for more effective gambling harm reduction strategies.

The report aims to create awareness about the risks associated with online gambling, particularly slots, and to underscore the importance of accessible and efficient support services for those affected.

As we navigate this complex landscape, it’s crucial to stay informed about the risks of online gambling and support efforts to promote responsible gaming practices.

GambleAware’s In-Depth Analysis of Gambling Harm

GambleAware’s annual report has brought to light that online slot games were responsible for over a third of all contacts made to its support services in 2022-23. During this period, a total of 6,645 individuals reached out to the National Gambling Treatment Service (NGTS), with 85% of these seeking treatment for their gambling problems. Notably, online slots topped the list of gambling activities causing harm, followed by internet sports betting and fixed-odds gaming machines in bookmaker shops.

Demographics and Treatment Outcomes

The majority of those seeking treatment were under 45 years old, with the highest numbers reported in the 25-29 and 30-34 age groups. The majority of clients (69%) identified as male, and most were employed. Remarkably, the success of treatment programmes was highlighted, with 64% completing their courses and 88% reporting improved behavior post-treatment.

Concerns Over Online Gambling Trends

The report underscores the growing concern around online gambling, particularly with online slots and internet sports betting. These platforms, easily accessible and often featuring few limits on play, have become major sources of gambling-related issues. GambleAware’s study indicates that 67.2% of consumers being treated did so for some form of online gambling, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions in this area.

GambleAware’s Response to the Growing Issue

In light of these findings, GambleAware chief commissioning and strategy officer Anna Hargrave emphasized the importance of a prevention-focused approach in addressing gambling harms. The charity’s data serves as a timely reminder of the need for investing in early treatment and prevention strategies, especially considering recent reports suggesting that the prevalence of harmful gambling might be larger than previously estimated.

Statutory Levy and the Future of Gambling Harm Prevention

GambleAware has also expressed concerns over the implementation of a statutory levy, as announced in the government’s Gambling Act white paper. While the levy is seen as a positive step towards ensuring long-term funding for research, education, and treatment, there are worries that it might risk the stability of third-sector services. GambleAware CEO Zoë Osmond calls for reassurances from the government to protect these essential services during the transition to a statutory levy system.

Broadening the Discussion on Responsible Gambling

This report by GambleAware is a crucial contribution to the ongoing discussion about responsible gambling and the need for robust support systems. It highlights the complex challenges posed by online gambling and the importance of continued vigilance and proactive measures to safeguard public health and well-being in the face of these challenges.
