Enhancing Responsible Gaming: Dutch Regulator Advocates for CRUKS Self-Exclusion Awareness

The Dutch gambling authority, Kansspelautoriteit, is launching an innovative pilot campaign to raise public awareness about CRUKS, the Netherlands’ national self-exclusion register for gambling.

This campaign, utilizing various social media platforms, aims to educate the public on how to use CRUKS effectively for self-exclusion from all licensed gambling activities in the country. The initiative comes as part of Kansspelautoriteit’s commitment to promoting responsible gambling and protecting vulnerable players.

The campaign will test different messages and creative concepts, focusing on reaching and resonating with at-risk groups. The objective is to identify the most impactful strategies to inform the public about the benefits and process of self-exclusion from gambling.

By enhancing the visibility and understanding of CRUKS, Kansspelautoriteit seeks to empower individuals to make informed decisions about their gambling habits and access necessary support.

CRUKS Launch and Features: Introduced alongside the Dutch online gambling market in October 2021, CRUKS offers players the option to self-exclude from gambling for a period ranging from six months to 99 years. In April this year, the register underwent improvements to simplify the sign-up process and introduced an eight-day reflection period for individuals opting to gamble again.

Revamped Tagline: The CRUKS system’s tagline was updated from “play break” to “gambling stop,” emphasizing a stronger commitment to halting gambling activities.

Recent Enforcement Actions: Alongside this awareness campaign, Kansspelautoriteit has been actively combating illegal gambling activities. A recent raid on an illegal bingo event in Dordrecht highlighted the regulator’s ongoing efforts to curb unauthorized gambling, particularly those attracting minors.

Continued Regulatory Vigilance: The KSA’s proactive approach extends to monitoring and acting against businesses like Dordtse Queens bingo, which persisted in running illegal bingo operations despite regulatory interventions.

Kansspelautoriteit’s pilot campaign to promote CRUKS is a crucial step in fostering a culture of responsible gambling in the Netherlands. By increasing public awareness and understanding of the self-exclusion register, the regulator is enhancing the tools available to individuals seeking to manage their gambling behaviors. As Kansspelautoriteit continues to enforce gambling regulations and encourage responsible gaming practices, it reinforces its role in safeguarding the integrity and welfare of the Dutch gambling community.
