KSA Warns Dutch Media Over Illegal Gambling Ads

Illegal online casinos are infiltrating Dutch media—often right under the public’s nose. The Netherlands Gambling Authority (KSA) is taking action.

Following a six-month investigation, the KSA has concluded that numerous online newspapers and magazines in the Netherlands have unknowingly promoted illegal online gambling operators. These sites, often not connected to the Dutch self-exclusion system (Cruks), pose a major risk to vulnerable players, especially those unaware of their unlicensed nature.

To protect consumers and uphold national gambling regulations, the KSA reached out to 42 editorial teams. Each was informed of the dangers associated with advertising illegal casinos and given guidelines to avoid future violations. Links, provider logos, and promotional materials were removed immediately by the contacted editors.

Players are urged to verify licensed operators via the official KSA Gambling Guide and avoid platforms that are not Cruks-registered. Media outlets are advised to perform stricter content checks when running gambling-related content.

KSA Cracks Down on Dutch Media Promoting Illegal Gambling Sites

3 Key Points

  • Widespread Non-Compliance in Dutch Media
  • Cruks Avoidance is a Major Red Flag
  • Media Reacted Swiftly to KSA’s Intervention

Going Beyond the Ads: Tipsters Under Scrutiny

In addition to mainstream media, the KSA is also looking into indirect gambling promotions—particularly from social media influencers and tipster sites.

One recent example is Analyse Master, a tipster site popular with younger audiences. While the KSA didn’t find direct violations, it expressed concern over the site’s influence on youth. Chairman Michel Groothuizen emphasized that while current ad bans target operators, third-party promoters like Analyse Master fall outside the scope of current regulations—something he considers a serious gap.

Groothuizen stated:

“The fact that there are channels on social media that promote sports betting among young adults is very undesirable and worrying… these audiences are especially vulnerable to gambling addiction.”

He welcomed plans by State Secretary Struycken to expand advertising rules, which would enable KSA to take direct action against third-party promoters of gambling content.

Why This Matters: The Role of Media in Gambling Safety

The Dutch media plays a crucial role in shaping public perception. When trusted news outlets and magazines inadvertently advertise unlicensed operators, it undermines the effectiveness of the country’s strict gambling regulations.

Illegal platforms do not adhere to responsible gambling practices, offer no support systems for at-risk players, and expose users to significant financial risk. Moreover, the absence of Cruks integration means that vulnerable individuals cannot shield themselves from further harm.

By cleaning up gambling-related content and aligning with KSA guidelines, media organisations contribute directly to consumer protection efforts and reduce the influence of the black market.

A Necessary Wake-Up Call for Media and Regulators

The KSA’s investigation underscores the persistent threat of illegal gambling advertising across digital platforms, including mainstream media. While editors responded promptly, the incident highlights a systemic vulnerability that must be addressed.

With growing concerns around youth gambling and the rise of influencer-backed betting promotions, stricter enforcement and broader advertising regulations are inevitable.
