Wynn Resorts Makes History with UAE’s First Gaming License
The UAE has taken a historic step, issuing its very first commercial casino license. Wynn Resorts, a global leader in luxury gaming and hospitality, is now set to redefine the UAE’s tourism landscape. The multi-billion-dollar Wynn Al Marjan Island Resort promises unparalleled luxury, boosting tourism and economic growth. Wynn’s groundbreaking project sets the stage for a transformative future in the region’s gaming and hospitality sector.
Wynn Resorts Secures UAE’s First Commercial Gaming License for Al Marjan Island Resort
Wynn Resorts achieved a major milestone in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on October 4, when the General Commercial Gaming Regulatory Authority (GCGRA) issued the nation’s first-ever commercial land-based casino gaming license. This development not only cements Wynn’s strategic investment in the Middle East but also signals a bold shift in the UAE’s tourism and hospitality sector.
Wynn Al Marjan Island: A Game-Changer for UAE Tourism
Wynn is currently building its ambitious Wynn Al Marjan Island Resort, located in Ras Al Khaimah (RAK), which marks the company’s first foray into the Middle Eastern market. The resort is a joint venture between affiliates of Wynn Resorts, Marjan, and RAK Hospitality Holding. Set against the stunning backdrop of Al Marjan’s man-made islands, this project aims to redefine luxury tourism in the UAE.
The GCGRA’s decision to award the license to Wynn is a clear endorsement of the company’s reputation for delivering world-class gaming and entertainment experiences. In an official statement, Wynn expressed its gratitude, saying, “We are under way with the construction of our resort in Ras Al Khaimah and look forward to being a key partner in the development of its tourism economy.” The company also extended its thanks to the GCGRA for its “confidence and trust” in approving the license.
Multi-Billion-Dollar Resort: More Than Just a Casino
Scheduled for completion in 2027, the Wynn Al Marjan Island Resort will be a multi-billion-dollar marvel, boasting a gaming floor, over 1,000 luxury hotel rooms, convention facilities, upscale shopping venues, and a variety of world-class dining options. Its strategic location—15 minutes from Ras Al Khaimah International Airport and 45 minutes from Dubai International Airport—positions it perfectly to attract international tourists.
The project is also pivotal for Marjan, the government-appointed “master-developer” for properties in Ras Al Khaimah. As the northernmost emirate in the UAE, RAK is leveraging this collaboration to establish itself as a premier tourism and investment destination in the region.
Wynn Resorts: A Perfect Fit for Al Marjan’s Vision
Craig Billings, CEO of Wynn Resorts, described the man-made Al Marjan Island as “a pristine setting” and an “ideal greenfield location for us to create the one-of-a-kind guest experiences” that Wynn is renowned for. His sentiments were echoed by Abdulla Al Abdooli, CEO of Marjan, who emphasized Wynn’s strong track record in developing luxury destinations with integrated gaming facilities.
“We are partnering with Wynn Resorts, one of the world’s most renowned integrated resort companies,” Al Abdooli stated. “By leveraging Wynn Resorts’ expertise in luxury hospitality, the new development will set a new benchmark in the region. It will create exceptional value for the Ras Al Khaimah economy and boost the leisure, business, and MICE tourism sectors.”
Competition Heats Up: MGM Resorts Eyes UAE Market
Wynn is not the only global player eyeing the UAE market. MGM Resorts CEO Bill Hornbuckle recently revealed at the Skift Global Forum in NYC that MGM has also filed for a gaming license, intending to develop a project in Abu Dhabi. This indicates a rapidly evolving gaming industry landscape in the UAE, promising a new era of luxury resorts and entertainment options in the region.
A New Era for UAE’s Gaming and Hospitality Industry
Wynn Resorts’ receipt of the UAE’s first commercial gaming license is a transformative moment for both the company and the region. With the Wynn Al Marjan Island Resort poised to open in 2027, the UAE is set to become a premier destination for luxury gaming, hospitality, and tourism. The project’s success could pave the way for further developments in the Middle Eastern gaming sector, setting new standards for integrated resort experiences and redefining the region’s tourism economy.
