The bill for online sports betting in North Carolina is now on its way to the governor’s office for approval
North Carolina is on the verge of legalizing online sports betting after the House of Representatives granted its second approval to the amendments made by the Senate in a 68-45 vote. The bill, known as HB 347, now awaits the signature of North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper to officially become law. Governor Cooper has already expressed his support for the legislation.
HB 347, introduced by Representative Jason Saine and a bipartisan group of lawmakers, permits mobile betting on a wide range of sports, including horse racing, professional leagues, college sports, Olympic events, and esports. The Senate made several key changes to the bill, such as the inclusion of parimutuel horse racing betting, an increase in the tax rate from 14% to 18%, and the elimination of promotional credit deductions from taxable gross gaming revenue.
North Carolina previously legalized land-based sports betting in 2021, and this latest development represents a significant expansion of the state’s gambling industry.
