Netherlands to Implement Stricter Online Gambling Regulations in 2024

Published

on

The Netherlands, having regulated online gambling since 2021, is set to introduce stricter regulations in the sector by late 2024. Dutch Minister for Legal Protection Franc Weerwind has announced proposed changes aimed at enhancing player protection and responsible gambling practices.

The Dutch online gambling landscape braces for a major overhaul!

New, stringent rules are on the horizon, set to reshape player interactions and spending habits.

Under the proposed changes, a significant focus is placed on establishing a “personal moment of contact” for players who wish to increase their monthly spending limit above €350 (€150 for those under 24 years old). This approach is designed to ensure that players make informed and considered decisions about their gambling spending.

The new regulations aim to empower players by allowing them to set their own spending limits, though there is no hard cap on spending for now. A legal change is being considered for the future to possibly introduce such a limit. The government is also emphasizing the need for a “neutral” design on pages where players set their limits, avoiding any elements that could entice players, such as images of money or luxury items.

In addition to the spending limit regulations, the Dutch gambling regulator, Kansspelautoriteit (KSA), has updated its guidelines to ensure compliance with the Netherlands’ Money Laundering and Terrorism Financing Prevention Act. The updated guidelines include new measures on risk management, customer due diligence, and reporting suspicious transactions, along with a focus on identifying signs of gambling addiction or compulsive gambling among customers.

Franc Weerwind emphasized the importance of these changes, stating that players would be automatically logged out if they exceed their play or time limit. The implementation of these new rules is expected to commence by autumn of 2024, marking a significant step in the country’s commitment to responsible gambling.

The KSA’s efforts to clarify and enforce these guidelines underscore the challenges operators face in balancing their responsibilities towards gambling harm prevention and anti-money laundering compliance.

As the Netherlands prepares for these new regulations, the online gambling industry is set to witness a paradigm shift towards greater accountability, transparency, and player protection. The government’s proactive approach reflects a growing global trend of tightening regulations in the online gambling sector to ensure a safe and responsible gaming environment.
