Bulgaria’s Major Crackdown: Over 150 Unlicensed Gambling Sites Blocked!

In a groundbreaking move, Bulgaria’s National Revenue Agency (NRA) has taken stringent action against the unlicensed online gambling arena. Over 150 gambling websites, most of which lacked a license within the European Union, have been brought under the axe this month alone.

This monumental action stems from the NRA’s targeted enforcement campaign, emphasizing their commitment to upholding gambling regulations. Since inheriting the mantle of gambling regulation in 2020, the NRA’s focus on maintaining a compliant digital betting landscape has been unwavering.

While specific names of the blocked sites remain confidential, the NRA has set a firm three-day suspension deadline. Should any site remain operative post this period, the NRA is poised to escalate matters, seeking a High Court mandate directed at internet service providers.

In related news, the NRA has announced the inception of a dedicated unit, overseeing the implementation of stringent anti-money laundering protocols among Bulgaria’s gambling operators. This unit will rigorously monitor gambling operations, especially those that raise suspicion. They’re equipped to liaise with international authorities, ensuring holistic surveillance. The key focus areas will be customer verification, mandatory documentation, and risk assessments to counter money laundering and potential terrorist financing.

Simultaneously, the Youth and Sports Minister, Dimitar Iliev, has made significant changes at the helm of the Bulgarian Sports Totalizator. Georgi Tarlekov steps in, replacing Angel Angelov as the executive director and management board chair. Tarlekov, a seasoned financier with expertise in management, marketing, banking, and finance, previously served as an advisory to Minister Iliev on fiscal matters. He is poised to lead until a formal competition determines a permanent appointee. Additionally, board members Rada Gyonova and Petar Peychev have been ushered in, bringing fresh perspectives to the table.

Stay tuned as Bulgaria reshapes its gambling landscape, taking monumental steps towards a secure, regulated, and compliant future!
